Important Considerations for Pet Travel

  • Northern Ireland travel: If travelling only to Northern Ireland, apply for a Northern Ireland Pet Travel Document. For onward EU travel, an AHC is still required.
  • Dogs and worming treatment: Dogs travelling to Ireland, Norway, Finland, Malta or Northern Ireland must receive worming treatment 24-120 hours before arrival, witnessed and recorded in the AHC by a vet.
  • Returning to the UK? Follow the official APHA Travel Checklist for re-entry requirements.
    • Dogs must also be wormed 24-120 hours before re-entry. Treatment must be licensed in the country where it is administered and effective against tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis).
  • Appointment attendance: All pets listed on the AHC must attend so the vet can scan their microchips. Owner attendance is encouraged wherever possible so the vet can confirm the details and arrange the signatures directly. An authorised person travelling with the pet may attend and sign instead when arranged in advance.
  • At the appointment, the vet will inspect your pet for signs of infectious disease before completing the AHC.
  • Travelling with an authorised person: An authorised person can accompany your pet when the owner is travelling separately; arrange this with us beforehand. The vet must see proof that the owner will travel within five days before or after the pet. Download the supplied authorisation letter template in Stage 2 and use the version in the language of the first country of entry. An authorised person coming to the appointment without the owner must bring the owner-signed letter; when the owner attends, the vet brings the letter for them to sign. Let us know who will attend and sign the AHC: this can be the owner or the authorised person who will accompany the pet.
